Jorhat, Feb. 20: Police last night arrested the alleged murderers of a 24-year-old driver inside the Gibbon wildlife sanctuary last Thursday, when appearance of a herd of wild elephants had scared off the killers and left a vital clue for investigators.
Three youths — Biplab Baruah, 27, Niranjan Gogoi, 28, and Rajib Baruah, 27 — were arrested last night on charges of murdering the driver of the Maruti van from Nakachari area near the sanctuary under Debrapar police outpost of Mariani police station. Sources said the trio have confessed to the crime.
Biplab, a resident of Butalikhuwa village and the son of Uttar Pub Nakachari gaon panchayat president Umakanta Baruah, is a music teacher, while Niranjan, of Morongial village, Nakachari, is a carpenter and Rajib, of Hautuli village under Kamargaon in Golaghat district, who has been residing in a rented house at Nakachari, repairs computers.
Mariani police station officer-in-charge P.K. Das said all the three youths were picked up late on Sunday night from their houses on the basis of a lead from a source.
Das said during interrogation, all the accused confessed to killing the driver of the vehicle (AS 03A 5588), Roopjyoti Saikia, 24, who was a resident of Bolomia Phoolpanisiga under Gaurisagar police station in Sivasagar district. He said the motive behind the crime was car lifting.
The officer said two among the accused — Biplab and Niranjan — committed the crime, while Rajib knew about the plot and assisted them in fleeing from the crime scene.

Das said Biplab and Niranjan had hired the van belonging to Bijit Kalita in Sivasagar district from Amguri town to be dropped at Madhupur village, for which one has to drive through the sanctuary.
He said the duo had killed the driver by slitting his throat inside the sanctuary around 4pm and dumped his body at compartment number five of the forest.
However, he said when they were trying to drive the vehicle away, the rear wheels got stuck in a drain and at the same time, a herd of wild elephants of the sanctuary appeared on the scene. The duo, fearing for their lives, abandoned the van and fled the scene. They reached Nakachari railway station on foot, where Rajib was waiting with an autorickshaw.
He added the autorickshaw driver did not know anything about his passengers or the crime. Das said the abandoned van helped investigators in solving the case.
The officer-in-charge said the duo were taken to the crime scene today to trace Biplab’s blood-stained jacket, but it could not be found. A knife with bloodstains, allegedly used to commit the crime, had been found near the crime scene on Friday.

Later today, the trio were produced in a court in Jorhat and remanded in judicial custody. They have been booked under Sections 34, 302, and 301 IPC.
